Part 12: Hippie fashion influences on áo dài

As hippie fashion gained foothold in Western countries, Vietnamese women also experimented with the silhouette of áo dài so that it conformed to the fashion of late 1960s-1970s.

The above photo is quite interesting in that although most of the women shortened their áo dài’s hem length and part their hair in the middle as fashion commanded, the woman on the far left chose the more conventional style.

Older women also did not change the silhouette of their áo dài.

The sharply-tightened waist appeared in late 1950s and was all the rage in the 1960s has finally showed signs of going out of fashion, although in the early 1970s it still co-existed with the new silhouette.

The new silhouette was not limited to more fashion conscious women, even school girls adopted it for their uniforms.
This style of áo dài continued to exist in the decades after 1975 (although women has stopped pairing it with the central hair-parting). I am unable to date when exactly it fell out of fashion, but I feel that should be the early 1990s.
